Michael Raedecker
sensoria
15th September
– 13th October 2002
‘What leavens the bleakness of Raedecker’s uninhabited wastelands and vacant interiors is the same element which makes them sparkle as paintings: the shocking delicacy of his virtuoso needlework, set against the shocking indelicacy of the paint which threatens to soil and engulf it.’ Kate Bush, Frieze, September - October 2000
The Approach is pleased to announce the third solo exhibition in the gallery of new paintings by Michael Raedecker. Since his first show in 1998 Raedecker has become one of the leading painters of his generation. Using an original technique of combining embroidery and paint he depicts atmospheric landscapes, interiors and portraits in which sewn thread is made to function in as many diverse ways as painted surfaces.
Raedecker has exhibited in a number of international group painting survey shows, to date including ‘Trouble Spot’, MUHKA & NICC, Antwerp, ‘Examining Pictures’, Touring: Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, MOCA, Chicago and Armand Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, ‘Painting at the Edge of the World’, Walker Art Centre, Minneapolis as well as the forthcoming ‘Painting Pictures’ at The KunstMuseum, Wolfsburg. Winner of the prestigious John Moores painting prize (1999) and Turner Prize nominee in 2000, this September Raedecker has a major solo exhibition at Centro Nazionale per le Arte Contemporanea Rome, which will be touring to the Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Basel. Michael Raedecker will also feature alongside John Currin and Laura Owens in the September edition of Parkett.
A new catalogue of Michael Raedecker’s work is being published by the Centro Nazionale per le Arte Contemporanea and the Museum für Gegenwartskunst and will be available at The Approach from September.
